Contemporary

art.

“Textiles as contemporary art can be ambitious, sophisticated and conceptually driven. My work uses punch needle to create contemporary abstract artworks, positioning textile practice firmly within the world of art and design. Every piece is made slowly and by hand, embracing repetition, labour, touch and time” - Alice.

[ Alice’s Philosophy ]

Technical —

The making process is not hidden, it is fundamental to the work and gives each piece its character, texture and meaning. It is a repetitive and time intensive process with works only formed through a culmination of thousands of hand punched loops. Exploring texture through surface, density and form.

Provenance —

Material, place and provenance matter. Alice works with carefully sourced British wool, including undyed Romney wool from sheep farms on the Kent marshes. Knowing where the material comes from, how it is processed and why it is chosen is an integral part of her practice, creating a direct relationship between place, material and finished piece.

Time —

In this time of face paced consumerism and mass production, making by hand highlights an alternative way of thinking about time, labour and value. Alice’s practice is slow and repetitive, requiring patience, focus and a sustained investment of time. Each loop is punched by hand, building gradually into a surface reflecting the traces of said time and labour into a tangible thing.

There is beauty in the handmade. Imperfections, irregularities, and subtle variations help to also show the presence of the maker.

Milieu —

To see textiles recognised and championed as a significant art form in its own right. The time, skill and creativity involved in making are often overlooked, shaped by its historical associations with domesticity, women’s work and craft. Alice’s practice draws on this history while reassurting wool as a material for contemporary artistic expression.

[ About Alice ]

Alice Liptrot is a visual artist working with punch needle and wool. Her practice explores containment and conformity through the repetitive, time intensive process of building works from thousands of hand punched loops. Using carefully sourced British wool, she creates abstract compositions that explore surface, density and form.
